Biographical Note

Holds a degree in Economics, a postgraduate qualification in Economic History and a PhD in Sociology. He is Emeritus Full Professor in the Department of Sociology at NOVA University Lisbon (NOVA FCSH) and an integrated researcher at EDUNOVA.ISPA. Over the past two decades, he has conducted research in the field of Historical Sociology of Education and coordinated several research projects. His work has consistently adopted a multidisciplinary approach, grounded in problem-oriented analysis and in macro and comparative perspectives on education systems and processes of modernisation.

He was awarded the Gulbenkian Science Prize (Social Sciences and Humanities) in 1987 and the Grémio Literário Prize in 2017.

He served as President of the National Education Council between 2013 and 2017.
